One of the most valuable skills I learned during this course was how to identify and work with reliable experts when researching and developing stories. Before this class, I understood the importance of interviewing people, but I did not fully appreciate how much an expert source can strengthen a story by providing credibility, context, and deeper insight. Learning how to evaluate potential experts and determine whether they are accessible and relevant to a specific beat is a skill I will continue to use throughout my career.

As a Public Affairs professional in the U.S. Army, I regularly create content that informs Soldiers, families, and the public. Whether I am writing an article, producing a video, or managing social media content, having access to knowledgeable sources helps ensure accuracy and allows audiences to better understand the subject being covered. Throughout this course, I learned that expert sources do not always have to be nationally recognized figures. In many cases, the most effective experts are local professionals, leaders, or subject matter experts who have direct knowledge and are available to provide timely information.

Another lesson I want to remember is the importance of analyzing interview techniques. Reviewing interviews from professional journalists helped me understand how thoughtful questions can encourage detailed responses and reveal perspectives that may not emerge through basic questioning.
